Basketball is one of the most popular spectator sports in the world, and thanks to a handful of legitimately licensed offshore sportsbooks, Vegas online basketball betting is a reality worldwide. Headquartered in jurisdictions where Internet gambling is a recognized and booming business, a few select online sports betting sites offer online basketball betting opportunities on the National Basketball Association (NBA) and both men's and women's NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) college basketball games. However, there are also top Internet sportsbooks which offer action on Euroleague and Euro Cup basketball, European basketball games, ROW (Rest of World) league play, international basketball leagues and WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) games.

As you know, the most popular online basketball betting takes place on NBA and NCAA college games. In the NBA 30 teams play an 82 game season, and all of those contests are available for point spread, money line and totals wagering. The same is true for college basketball, with teams usually playing between 33 and 36 games during the year. Professional and college basketball games also offer proposition and futures betting opportunities. This allows you to place a wager on an individual team's or player's performance in a particular game, as well as place your bet on who you believe will win the NBA Championship and March Madness Tournament weeks and even months before those events are held. And a few sites even provide free Matchup Tools and other statistical support to help you make an informed wager.

WNBA and European futures and props bets are also available from the top legally licensed Internet sports betting sites, a list of which we provide here on our website. In recent years a new Vegas basketball betting option has appeared which gives the smart round ball bettor access to a potentially powerful wager. In the past, once you placed your bet on a particular basketball matchup and the game began, your involvement was over. However, the exciting new live in-game basketball betting option is now offered from a few reputable and legitimately licensed online sportsbooks. This allows you to place wagers on your favorite NBA and NCAA basketball teams in the middle of a game when you see an injury or another opportunity which provides an attractive betting situation.

Additionally, every year the top sportsbook operators hand out generous welcome bonuses, free bets and other player rewards during the NBA Playoffs and the NCAA March Madness Tournament. If you open an account with one of the sports betting sites we have reviewed and recommend here on our site, you can take advantage of these seasonal bonuses to instantly pad your bankroll. During the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship tournament which takes place in mid March and early April, check out the Internet sports betting sites listed here and click on their Promotions tabs. Look for March Madness promos and free bracket entries, as well as other incentives, and make a deposit to instantly access the generous bonuses offered.

The same is true during the NBA Playoff run and prior to the NBA Championship matchup. Special time sensitive bonuses and rewards instantly boost your betting power. And due to the extreme worldwide popularity of the NBA basketball league, you can also place wagers during the NBA playoffs on individual player performances. The most established and respected Internet sportsbooks all offer mobile basketball betting applications, and PC and Mac devices are supported. All major mobile operating systems such as Android, iOS, Windows Phone and BlackBerry provide access to legal online basketball betting for US, UK and international sports fans, and convenient one-click access is provided below.

Popular Basketball Bets And Understanding The Spreads

The point spreads in basketball are generally the same as you would find in football. The visiting teams are always on top and the home teams on the bottom. Here is a screenshot of a typical basketball betting line that includes the moneyline, the spread and totals.

Current Basketball Spread

If your new to sports betting, a good initial strategy would be to bet on the dogs and take the points. An even better strategy would be to take the home dogs. History has shown that taking the points when in doubt is the right move.

Breaking Down The Spread In Basketball

Point Spread - Using the above screenshot as an example, Golden State is getting 5 points against Indiana. This means that if you bet Indiana, they must win the game by 5 points or more to have a winning bet. If the final score lands on 5 such as a 99/94, then you would push and your initial stake would be returned.

Moneyline - If you want to bet on the moneyline, your either going to lay a lot of juice to get your team straight up to win, or your going to get good odds for the dog to win straight up. If you really know what your doing and bet moneylines in moderation, you can definitely make some nice scores.

Golden state is a pretty good up and down team that might negate Indiana's great defense, so that might not be a bad bet although choosing your spots to make these plays is critical. The idea is to find teams that have a bad historical record against their opponents, or teams that just aren't playing well. For example if GS has beaten Indiana in their place 7/8 times, taking the odds in a moneyline bet makes a lot of sense. But if they have lost 7/8, your probably throwing money down the drain. You could also pay attention to player injuries to make such decisions. At the end of the day there is a lot to consider, and the more versed you get with betting on basketball, the more you will learn about what to look for and when to take your moneyline shots.

Over Unders - These are pretty basic bets, your simply picking if the total score between the two teams will go over or under the line. So in our screenshot example, if you bet over in the GS game, both teams need to score a combined total of 197 or higher to win your bet.

Teasers, Pleasers And Parlay - These bets are typically not recommended in basketball. Frankly it's just too tough to hit them compared to betting on NFL where the lines hold pretty true to what Vegas offers. If you do choose to play any of these types of wagers, do it in moderation. Meaning take small shots for fun and you might get lucky. The exception to this would be betting teasers, these allow you to move the line in any direction, but you need to bat 1000 to get paid. So again do these in moderation and your bankroll will thank you for it.
